How to Brush Your Hair the Right Way

Bonjour Dah-ling! Knots and tangles and snags, oh my! You might be saying to yourself, “How complicated can brushing your hair really be? Pick up brush, comb it through hair, repeat…right?” Wrong. If you want to keep your hair in mint condition (and let’s be honest, don’t we all?) there’s a bit of a science to detangling. It might not seem like a big deal, but brushing the wrong way could lead to split ends, breakage, and (gasp!) more tangles than you started with. So without further ado, a lesson in proper hairbrush etiquette…

It’s Okay to Be Picky

Bottoms Up!

No, we aren’t talking about your favorite cocktail (although we’ve all experienced tangles so bad you wish you had a drink!). No, we’re talking about brushing technique. When attacking your tangles, always start from the bottom and work your way up. Starting at the root and brushing down to the end is a recipe for snapping, snagging, and unnecessary breakage. And no one wants that!

Wet Hair? Proceed with Caution

Wet hair must be handled with the utmost care, as it’s in its most fragile state. Start by getting as much water out of strands as possible – wrapping your hair up in a towel for ten minutes should do the trick. Next, spritz strands with a detangling product like Super Comb Prep & Protect. If you know you’re prone to tangles, run a brush through dry hair before you jump in the shower. While showering, brush conditioner through your strands with a wide-tooth comb – this will make it significantly easier to manage when you get out. If there is a section that’s especially tangled, grab your wide-tooth, take a deep breath, and patiently work through the knot.
